Africa is considered by paleoanthropologists to be the oldest inhabited territory on Earth, with the discovery of fossils in East Africa and evidence of human occupation perhaps as early as 7 million years ago.

South Africa is the only country in the world with three capital cities - Cape Town (legislative capital), Pretoria (administrative capital) and Bloemfontein (judicial capital). Cape Town, South Africa's oldest city, has some interesting places to visit like the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, penguin colony, Congo Caves and Ostrich Farm. Sun City, the 'Las Vegas of South Africa' with its casinos, hotels, resorts, vibrant complexes, golf courses, mock volcanoes and extravagant shows, is a playground for the rich and famous. Africa has a wild population of carnivores (lions, hyenas, and cheetahs) and herbivores (buffalo, deer, elephants, camels, and giraffes) ranging freely on primarily open non-private plains. It is also home to a variety of jungle creatures like snakes and primates, and aquatic life, including crocodiles and amphibians. Mammals like lions, leopards, white rhinos, blue wildebeest, kudus, impalas, hyenas, hippopotamus and giraffes are found in the bushveld habitat of Kruger National Park, Mala Mala Reserve and Waterberg Biosphere. South Africa houses many endemic species of animals, among them the critically endangered Riverine Rabbit in the Karoo.

East Africa, consisting mainly of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia and Ethiopia, among others, is known for its magnificent physical features, with the two highest mountains in Africa located here - Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. River Nile, the longest river in Africa originates from Africa's biggest lake, Lake Nyanza (Lake Victoria), and Lake Nakuru is popular for its pink flamingos. The region is also famous for its game reserves located at the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya; the rhino sanctuary, Rothchild's giraffe and for its research on Chimpanzees. Politically, East Africa is famous for its hospitality to refugees and its involvement in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. Historically, East Africa was known for the extensive trade networks that penetrated the region and linked together people from various backgrounds. Swahili is the most widely used language among the 1,000 languages spoken in Africa.

Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas - from subarctic on its highest peaks, to primarily desert or arid climate in the North, to tropical in most of its plains. While its central and southern areas contain both savanna plains and very dense jungle (rainforest) regions, in some convergent areas, vegetation patterns such as sahel and steppe dominate. Africa is extremely rich in plant biodiversity, with more than 20,000 different plants. While South Africa has a great wealth of flowering plants, it has few forests.
