About 40 kms from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram
(Trivandrum)
,
Varkala is a quiet seaside
destination on the Arabian sea shore. The
beach, offering a magnificent view of sunrise
and sunset that few destinations in
Kerala can boast of, is
now becoming a favourite spot for tourists in India and
abroad.

More about
Varkala
Climate Varkala has three
seasons ranging from hot and
humid summers (average temperature 25-33 deg.
celsius) to the cloudy monsoons from June-Sep, to
pleasant winters thereafter from
Oct-Jan (average
temperature 22-28 deg. celsius).
Language Malayalam is the most
prevalent language but one can communicate in basic
English in some tourist
places.
The best
time to visit Varkala beach is when it
extends up to the very cliff face giving an
additional 500 m
of serene beach space. This happens during the months of
Dec/ Jan/ Feb.The high
rocky cliffs of this beach are quite unique.
Varkala is also
famous for its 3,500 year old Janardanaswamy
temple, (known as Dakshin Kashi -
Benares of the south) and
Papanasam beach, which has a popular
nature cure centre nearby.
Another place
to visit is the now dilapidated Varkala
Tunnel, part of the
TS Canal, which was an important
waterway in pre-independence times. The
Kaduvayil Thangal Dargah,
the hill-top
mausoleum of Sree Narayana
Guru and the Sivagiri Mutt
are other
popular local pilgrim sites.
