More about
Vaishnodevi
Climate The obvious altitude
difference between Katra and
Vaishnodevi accounts for the significant
temperature difference between the two
locations and a reference to the temperature of Katra town
alone may thus be misleading. Katra is
hot in summers (average
temperatures 20-40 deg. celsius) and cold in
winters (average temperatures 3-15 deg.
celsius) while Vaishnodevi is
pleasant in summers (average
temperatures 13-28 deg. celsius) and enjoys snowy,
cold winters (average
temperatures -2 to 12 deg. celsius).
Language The main languages are Hindi,
Kashmiri, Dogri, Urdu and English (in tourist
spots).
Most
pilgrims walk up the 12 kms of Mountain
Trikuta on which the shrine
of Vaishnodevi in the form of a cave is
located at an altitude of 5200 ft. The
'yatra' as it is called takes about
a day up and down and a yatra slip
has to be collected from Katra town bus stand (located at an
altitude of nearly 2500 ft) where the tourist
centre is located. This ensures your entry into the
shrine. There are also helicopter, horse / pony
and palanquin services to the top
for a fee. Katra, the base camp for
Vaishnodevi is at an altitude of 2500 ft. and has various
facilities for food and
accommodation.
