This "Queen of Hill-Stations" and  the capital of Nilgiri district is located at a height of approximately 6804 ft above  sea-level. Udagamandalam (Ooty) is characterised by hills and plateaus dense with vegetation, tea gardens and eucalyptus plantations.

The Botanical Gardens at Ooty is home to fossilized trees that are more than 20 million years old, along with a variety of birds that are both migratory as well as round-the-year residents. The Botanical Gardens also offers a study of the flora found in and around Udagamandalam (Ooty).

Built during the British Raj, the Railway Station itself is a World Heritage Site. D oddabetta Peak - the highest point in the Nilgiris, Ketti Valley, Pykara lake and falls, Mudumalai National Park are the places that fall under the Protected Natural Areas and open to visitors.

Most areas of the hills in Ooty fall under natural reserve forests and special permission is required to camp in these places. The Fernhill Palace, Stone House, Lake and Boathouse are other places of interest. Avalanche , near Ooty, is becoming popular as a tourist destination.
