'cultural capital of Kerala ', Thrissur
(Trichur) is famous for its Pooram festival
(in Apr-May), a colourful and thunderous 36-hour marathon
temple festival.

Climate The city enjoys a
tropical climate, the
monsoons start in June. The months of
April-May can get pretty humid which is also one of the best
times to visit the city for the famed
Thrissur Pooram. The best weather is
from Oct-Feb.
Language Malayalam is the most
prevalent language but one can communicate in basic
English in some tourist
places.

The
Pooram festival brings to the mind
images of a crowd amidst the decorated elephants, the
noise,
the fervour and the excitement. Not to be missed is the
marvellous, magical effect of the
'Panchavadyam' (a combination of
five percussion and wind instruments), the
30-elephant pageantry (a
spectacular procession of gold-caparisoned elephants carrying
deities from temples) and
the climax with an exhibition of fireworks at
2.30 am.

Academy, Kerala Lalitakala
Academy,
Kerala Sangeetha
Nadaka Academy, Kerala Kalamandalam
are all located here. Cheruthuruthy,
near Thrissur is the home of Kerala
Kalamandalam, a deemed
university and residential learning
centre for the classical arts of
Kathakali, Koodiyattam, Mohiniyaattam,
Thullal and
Panchavaadyam.

trained here.
Guruvayur (known as
Dwaraka of the South) is about 30 kms
from Thrissur (Trichur). The Sree Krishna
Swamy or
Guruvayoorappan temple,
dedicated to the Hindu god Krishna, is renowned for
its healing powers and an elaborate offering called
'Thulabaram' is made to the
deity, where a devotee is weighed against offering of bananas, sugar,
jaggery or coconuts.
Other places to see here are numerous
temples , the
oldest church in South India built by
St. Thomas when he landed here at
Kodungallur, The Kerala Police
Academy, Shakthan Thampuran Palace,
Archeological & Art Museum, Thrissur Zoo, Peechi
Dam, Nattika beach, Athirapally
and Vazhachal Waterfalls,
Vilangan
Kunnu (amusement park) and the flowing river
Bharathapuzha at
Cheruthuruthy.
