For a quiet town, this place has quite a few 'firsts' to its credit - Herman Gundert , the German Missionary, wrote the 1st Malayalam Dictionary when he was residing in Thalasserry (Tellicherry); the first Malayalam Newspaper was published from here; Cricket was played here much before it was introduced in Calcutta in 1860; the Mambally Bakery here was the first Kerala bakery; and Malayalam's first novel was written here.
