A flourishing centre for international trade since 14th century, Surat is one of the oldest cities in India, with a unique culture. Known for its diamonds, three quarters of the world's diamonds are cut and polished here.

Major tourist attractions in Surat are Dandi, Dumas, Tithal, Bardoli, Winchester Museum, Gopipura, Unai lake resort, Amba Mata temple and the Vansada National Park. Dumas, Hajira and Ubhrat are a few of the several beautiful beaches located near Surat.

Dandi is a place of historical importance. It was from here that Mahatma Gandhi started Dandi March in 1930. Gandhiji also launched a farmer's satyagraha from the Swaraj Ashram at Bardoli.
