A floating holiday on scenic waterways in a houseboat, sampling exotic cuisine, is perhaps one of the most enchanting experiences in the world. The traditional houseboat was called kettuvallom, meaning, a boat made by tying together pieces of wood. Incredible as it may sound, not a single nail is used in the making of a kettuvallom. Seasoned Jack wood planks are joined together with coir rope and then coated with black resin made from boiled cashew nut shells . Today, these giant 80 foot long crafts have been adapted into luxuriously furnished houseboats. A houseboat (kettuvallom ) usually has one, two or three bath attached bedrooms ( with or without Air conditioning ), an open lounge, deck, kitchenette and a crew comprising oarsmen, a cook and guide.

    Normally
, in the Deluxe AC houseboat the AC will be operational only in the bedroom from 2100 hrs. till 0600 hrs next day. In the Premium AC houseboat, normally the AC will be switched on in the bedroom according to your requirement.

  • The Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur region in Himachal Pradesh  is a land of legends and mythology. Due to its proximity to Tibet, the lifestyle and religion of the inhabitants have been influenced by Buddhism. Almost every village has a gompa or temple. There are imposing monasteries at Moorang, Kyi, Tabo, Lalung, each one containing their own beautiful sculptures and wood carvings. The old Hindustan - Tibet road, which was the main trade route to and from Tibet passes through the Kinnaur valley.

    The Essential Guide

  • Travelling over rugged terrain

The dry and arid Lahaul valley has its borders with Zanskar and Ladakh hardly receives any rainfall. Spiti which means "Middle Country" lies between Tibet, Ladakh, Kinnaur, Lahaul and Kulu and share the same dry terrain. The rugged and rocky mountain slopes sweeping down to the riverside give this landscape a moonlike appearance. Steep rocky mountains rise to several thousands of feet and are cut through by fast moving rivers.

These two valleys and Kinnaur which lies to the south of Spiti. The simple inhabitants of this mountain region follow mainly Buddhism in great faith as can be seen from the ancient monasteries that these regions have. Due to its inaccessibility all year round, and tourism being fairly new, these regions remain unspoiled and most of these beautiful valleys still remain unexplored.

The Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur region is a land of legends and mythology. Due to its proximity to Tibet, the lifestyle and religion of the inhabitants have been influenced by Buddhism. Almost every village has a gompa or temple. There are imposing monasteries at Moorang, Kyi, Tabo, Lalung; each one containing their own beautiful sculptures and wood carvings. The old Hindustan - tobet road, which was the main trade route to and from Tibet passes through the Kinnaur valley.

Because it receives very little rainfall, most of the land consists of rugged barren mountains. Nature here is awe-inspiring with villages and lakes situated against the backdrop of snow capped peaks. This tour gives you an insight into the peaceful lives of these people still untouched by changes and you get a chance to visit some of the oldest and best Buddhist monasteries.

    The Essential Guide

  • Travelling over rugged terrain

Restricted until 1988, this 470km journey is open only three months of the year in the summer - July to September. This drive is along the second highest motorable road in the world to Leh, then where we continue driving across Khardungla ( 5600 m ), the highest motorable road in the world, to Nubra Valley. This track from Manali to Leh is unparalleled for sheer scale and mountain beauty.

Starting in the lush green Kulu-Manali valley, the highway to Leh begins with a steep 50km ascent to the Rothang Pass ( 3980 m ). After crossing the pass, the contrast in landscape is stark with the rugged brown of the rain shadow area of Lahaul. We drive across many high passes, including Taglangla at 5330 metres. We undertake this tremendous safari, camping for three nights along the way to ensure smoother acclimatization. Enroute we get to see the majestic ochre colored landscape of this unique and harsh country making this drive a lifetime's experience.

In and around Leh we spend some days visiting monasteries and other sights before going on to Nubra Valley, which has preserved some of the finest Buddhist artifacts and ways of life . Finally we visit the Dha Hanu region in the lower Indus Valley. The Dards or Drogpas as they are locally known as and who live here are the last race of Aryans confined to this region which has considerable ethnographical importance and is an anthropologist's paradise.

The Dards have preserved a culture and a way of life that is distinct from the other Ladakhis due to their Aryan features, their customs differ markedly from the Ladakhis of Tibetan descent. They show distinct traces of pre-Buddhist animistic religion known as the Bon-Chos. This tour is definitely a culturally rich and interesting experience as you meet with these varied people.
