north west Himalayas, Shimla
was once the summer capital of British India. Surrounded by
pine, deodar and oak
forests, it is today a
major hill station in Himachal Pradesh, a holiday spot for visitors

More about
Shimla
Climate Shimla is located on the
slopes of lower Himalayas. A very cool place,
the temperature range is not very high and the maximum
temperature in summer rarely crosses 25 deg. celsius.
Winters are cold with
chilly winds blowing from the upper
Himalayas. Around Christmas, Shimla gets
snow.
Language The main languages spoken are Hindi,
Pahari (local dialect) and English (in tourist
spots).
The
best way to visit Shimla is by the
narrow gauge train from
Kalka which passes through
mountains and offers beautiful
views
on the way.
All visitors to Shimla inevitably walk
down the Mall, the main promenade that runs
along the top of the ridge - a busy area with old
colonial buildings, souvenir shops and
restaurants. At the top end is
Scandal Point, a large open square, a
favourite rendezvous for visitors and the locals. The
labyrinth of Shimla's bazaars
spill over the edge of the Mall.
Places of interest in and around Shimla
include Jakhoo Hill
(highest point), Glen (a pretty picnic spot
beyond Annandale), Summer Hill,
Chadwick Falls, Viceregal Lodge
(this Gothic splendour houses the
Indian Institute of Advanced Studies),
Himachal State Museum, Sankat Mochen
(temple of the Hindu god Hanuman),
Devi Temple, Prospect Hill,
zoo, Navbahar, Aviary at Old Raj Bhavan, Tibetan
Monastery and Dhengu Mata
Temple.
There are some exquisite hill staions
around Shimla like Kausali, Chail, Mashorba, Parwanoo,
Naldhera and Shilonbagh.
