More about Rajasthan

Climate
The climate can be divided into four seasons: Pre-Monsoons, Monsoon, Post-Monsoon and Winter. Pre-monsoon (Apr-June) the hottest season, has temperatures rising upto 48 deg. celsius. In the desert, the temperatures drop at night and prevailing winds carry dust storms (known locally as andhi). Monsoons are slightly cooler but humid. Post-monsoon and winter (Oct-Feb) are the best seasons to visit Rajasthan.

Language
Rajasthani, Hindi and English (in tourist spots) are the main languages.

Connectivity
Rajasthan has a good inter city surface transport system both in terms of railways and road network. One of the best ways to see rural life is by road. But the places are also connected by air for those on the fast track.

In Rajasthan, you can choose to live like a 'maharaja' in the lavish properties at Jaipur, Mandawa, Bikaner, Jaisalmer , Jodhpur, Udaipur, Pushkar, Devigarh, Rohet and Ranakpur. In a class by themselves, the old family retainers render the traditional Rajput hospitality to the tourists at these heritage hotels and resorts.

Rajasthan is often referred to as huge open-air museum with several majestic forts, intricately carved temples, havelis (mansions) and step wells making it a paradise for an architecture buff. Rajasthan boasts of national parks at Bharatpur and Ranthambore and many sanctuaries, with most of these areas closed only briefly during the monsoon. During monsoons and in summer, you can visit the only hillstation in the state, Mount Abu , the coolest place at this time.

Known for its traditional, colorful art work, the finest bandhani work in textiles comes from Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Barmer, Pali, Udaipur and Nathdwara. The block, tie and dye, Bagru and Sanganer prints, Zari embroidery, and the famous miniature paintings are all major export products from Rajasthan. Rajasthan is a shoppers' paradise, with beautiful goods found at low prices.

The rural areas are known for the art of silver smithy and a variety of jewellery, from anklets to earrings to head gears. Besides silver, some exquisite work in Lac bangles, Kundan and Minakari, enameled gold jewellery, uncut diamonds and emerald-cutting are also very popular. Wooden furniture, carpets, blue pottery are the other exclusive products.

In Rajasthan, one thing that is not to be missed is a traditional 'thali' meal. Lunch or dinner is served by the local host in a steel plate with an innumerable number of small steel cups which contain the entire flavour of Rajasthan in the form of lentils, curries and gravies.
