Originally
designated as a game sanctuary , this enchanting
247 square-mile park near the coffee land of Coorg was declared
a national park
in 1974. Recently renamed 'Rajiv Gandhi National
Park', Nagarhole has gentle
slopes and shallow
valleys
surrounding it.

Climate In summer, the
temperature is usually around 33 °C.
Winter is brief from Nov-Jan and has the
temperature dipping to 14 °C and rains from
June-Sep. The best season to
visit the National Park is from May-Oct.
Language The main languages spoken
are Kannada, Tamil and
English.
Nagarhole is
blessed with an abundance of wildlife,
especially with huge herds of Asian
Elephants. You can also find a variety of reptiles
including marsh
crocodiles, monitor lizards, rock pythons, cobras, vipers,
terrestrial tortoises and toads,
mammals like elephants, jackals, tigers, panthers,
gaurs, muntjacs, sambar and spotted deer, mongoose,
civet cats, hyenas and
several other species in the forest.
A myriad variety of
insects, including some very colourful
butterflies,
also populate this lovely southern jungle of
India. A variety of accommodation is
available at Karapura village nearby.
The main trees found
are rosewood, teak, sandalwood and
silver oak.
