Manali
(6150 ft) derived its name from Manavalaya
i.e. the abode of Manu, who in mythology, was the
only survivor of the great flood and is said
to have fathered the human race. With the
majestic grandeur of the Himalayas on one
side, river Beas cutting across the
town, verdant valleys with rolling
meadows and grazing herds
dotting the hillsides, apple
orchards and the folk music adding
romance to the ambience, Manali / Kullu is
rightly called the "Valley of the
Gods ".

More about
Manali / Kullu
Climate Manali, which is in the
Himalayas with the snowline in summers also
not very far away, has cool summers and
harsh winters (when the snow line comes down
and there's snowfall and heavy woollen cloths are required).
During monsoons, there are
landslides which hamper movement. There are
two tourist seasons, in summer and in winters when the
snow falls.
Language The main languages spoken are
Pahari (a local dialect), Hindi
and English (in tourist spots).
Experience the
local color and beauty in Kullu-Manali's
temples, quaint villages and the
vibrant and festive mood of the people and their
colorful clothes and
handicrafts. The festive Kullu
Dussehra, a 10-day long celebration in
autumn, is a not-to-be-missed colorful
folk event
with dancing, singing and performances which extend
well into the nights.
You can
encounter adventure - on the myriad
trekking trails and jeep safari
routes on the
Manali - Leh road crossing some
highest passes in the world; while
skiing on the snow slopes;
rafting down the river
Beas during May-June or
just as you try your hand at some amateurish angling
and fishing or some
paragliding in Solang
Valley.
Places of interest in and around Manali /
Kullu include Kothi (at the foot of
Rohtang Pass, 12 km from Manali
town, a lovely spot offering a magnificent view of the
snow-capped peaks, glaciers and an
awe-inspiring gorge where the river
Beas enters a chasm about 60 m deep),
Van Vihar (just off the Mall with
pathways between towering deodars leading to a boating pond),
Tibetan Market and Mall, Rahalla
Falls, Rohtang Pass (gateway to
Lahaul-Spiti valley, open for just
about four months a year), Solang Valley,
Marrhi village, Rani Nala (glacier
point where there is snow throughout the
year), Jagatsukh Temple, Naggar
Castle, Roerich Art Gallery, Hadimba Temple or
Doongri Temple (four-tiered
pagoda-like wooden temple), Vashist
Spring, Tibetan Monastery, Beas Kund
(source of the Beas river),
Manikaran (where icy cold waters of
Parvati river co-exists
with the boiling hot springs water), Bijli
Mahadev shrine and Camping site
