More about Madhya Pradesh
Climate The state has
hot, dry summers and cold
winters. Post monsoon, climate is
generally cool and
pleasant and a nice time to visit.
Language The languages spoken
here are Hindi and English (in tourist
spots).
Connectivity The major cities
of Madhya Pradesh are well connected by flights
and trains to the rest of the
country. The national highways that run through Madhya Pradesh are
also good, but the other roads are not always in a very good
condition.
The 11 National
Parks and 31 Wildlife Sanctuaries
including the famous Kanha National
Park
and Bandhavgarh National Park , said to be Asia's largest
wildlife sanctuary and tiger
reserve and the wildlife at Panna
and Pench are worth exploring. In
its lush forests, the tiger
prowls and the spotted deer, the
blue-bull and the gaur roam free.
The Barasingha has been saved from
extinction and its numbers have multiplied
in Kanha
National Park.
This state is the richest when it comes to
painted rock-shelters, the majority of which
have been found in the districts of Sehore, Bhopal ,
Raisen, Hoshangabad and Sagar. Close to Bhopal at
Bhimbetka, prehistoric caves
have been excavated, where some fascinating
paintings reveal a cultural
sequence right from the late stone
age, paleolithic times to the early
historical period. Experts have concluded that these are at
least as old as the specimen at
Pyrenees.
The most
famous erotic sculptures in the
world at Khajuraho were
built under the generous and artistic patronage of the
Chandela kings in 10th-11th century
BC. One can view them in the 85
temples, magnificent in form and
richly carved. The oldest Buddhist Stupa in
the world at Sanchi, built by Emperor
Ashoka (3rd century BC) is on a small hillock near Bhopal
and definitely worth a visit.
Not to be
missed are the palaces at Gwalior
and Bhopal, two
fast-developing cities which still maintain their culture and
heritage; and the monuments at Orchha. Take a break at the only
hillstation in Madhya Pradesh - Pachmarhi.
