The creator of Lucknow as it is today was Nawab Asaf ud Daula. The city became known as a centre for Urdu poetry and courtly diction, and reached its zenith during the reign of Wajid Ali Shah who was a connoisseur of music and poetry. It was during his reign that the British appropriated Awadh .

Today Lucknow is known for its unique styles of embroidery - Chikan (exquisite shadow-work embroidery) and Lakhnawi Zardozi. And this is the land of the elaborate Mughlai cuisine and one cannot leave without eating the biriyani and the kebabs. Shopping in Lucknow is a royal experience and one can pick up elaborately embroidered sarees and salwar kameezes for a bargain .

Places to visit in and around Lucknow are Hussainabad or Chhota Imambara, Asafi Imambara, Shah Najaf Imambara & Hussainabad Imambara (all ornate mausolems with white domes with many turrets and minarets housing tombs), Rumi Darwaza or gateway, Kaiserbagh Palace Complex, National Botanical Research institute, Residency and State Museum / Zoo.
