At the
confluence of the Lachen
River and Lachung River
(tributaries of the River
Teesta), Lachung
(meaning small hill), towering at
8610 ft, is one of the most exquisite
villages in the valleys of North Sikkim
. With resplendent snow-capped
mountains, dazzling
waterfalls and sparkling
streams, Lachung has been described as the
" most
picturesque village of Sikkim " by
Joseph Salton Hooker in his definitive, The Himalayan
Journal (1855).

Climate Lachung, as it is high up in the North
East Himalayas, has warm temperate summers
and cold, snowy winters.
Language The languages spoken are
Nepali, Lepcha and
Bhutia.
The
entire valley of Lachung gets a completely
different look in winter when wrapped by
thick layer of snow. Most of Lachung's
inhabitants are of Lepcha and
Tibetan stock. The Indian
Army has a forward base in the town.
Lachung has a small market but due to tourist
influx several small and medium hotels have
come up with basic facilities.
Lachung provides a base
for the travellers bound to Yumthang
Valley, popularly known as the 'Switzerland
of the East'. The beautiful Rhododendron
flowers, which bloom in the summer,
is a main attraction for tourists.
The
Lachung Monastery adorning a
solitary hilltop is a perfect place for meditation. Sikkim
offers best buys for hand woven
carpets, thangkas and other
paintings. Other items typical of the
state are large cardamoms, Lepcha weave bags,
purses, jewellery, liquors etc.
