Connectivity
The beauty and
serenity of Kozhikode beach
still remains unexploited making it worth a
visit.
Other places to
see are Mannanchira
Square and the
adjoing grounds (an arcadia with beautiful trees and plants,
an artificial hill, shrubs, sculpture, an open air
theatre and a musical fountain), Kappad
Beach (where Vasco da Gama landed in
1498), Vadakara, Art
gallery and
Krishna Menon Museum, Lalitha Kala Academy,
Planetarium, Thusharagiri & Kozhippara
waterfalls, Pavayil Cheerpu (a wonder land),
Peruvannamuzhi, Kakkayam (Dam
site), Bird sanctuary, Crocodile sanctuary and
Purakkattiri
(for house
boats).
Beypore ,a town south of
Kozhikode (Calicut) is famous for its ancient
shipbuilding industry, where you
can still see huge boats called
Urus being constructed and
anchors of all sizes being made. The huge sea
faring Urus are made without using a
single iron nail, totally of
wood. One can pick up miniature
reproductions of these ships as mementos to take
back. The Kalasis - a
group of people who specialise in this have many other marvels
up their sleeves.
You can also shop for tiles,
pottery and
ceramic ware at Feroke, where this
industry has thrived due to the availability of fresh clay
brought by rapid rivers from the Western Ghats after
passing through forests.
