Connectivity
Home of
the Rathors (a clan of
Rajputs), Jodhpur is well-fortified
by a high stonewall, nearly 10 km in length with eight gates
facing various directions within which stands an imposing
fort. The city lies just outside and facing
the fort is the Umaid Bhawan Palace ,
one of the most spacious, sprawling and well-planned palaces
in India. The peculiar slant of the sunset
here lends the desert landscape an awe-inspiring
glow.
What put Jodhpur on the world map is the
invention of 'jodhpurs' or
riding breeches by Pratap Singh (who ruled in
1870s). He also invented the close-collared
Jodhpuri coat and
Jodhpuri boots
.
An eight-day
Nagaur Fair, popularly known as the
Cattle Fair, is held every year during
Jan-Feb and is the second largest
in Rajasthan
. Nagaur is a sea of animals, trading over
70,000 bullocks, camels and
horses every year. The two-day
Maand festival of music,
dance and folklore held in
Sep-Oct
is also popular.
Jodhpur is famous
for enamelled silver and gold
ornaments for the neck called timniya. A
shopper's paradise, one can get
Kundan (stones set in gold) and
Minakari (enamelled gold and silver)
jewellery, block printed textiles and several
other hand crafted items
.
Places of interest
in and around Jodhpur include the Umaid Bhawan
Palace , Jaswant Thada, Maha Mandir,
Mandore Gardens, Balsamand Lake and Palace,
Clock Tower and Sardar Market,
Girdikot, Bishnoi Tribal Village, Guda Bishnoi,
Ossianji Temple, Sardar Samand Lake and Palace
