More
about Jammu & Kashmir
Climate The Kashmir valley enjoys
an enchanting climate for the major part of
the year, with four clear-cut seasons - spring,
summer, autumn, and winter. The
weather is cool most of the year and gets
very cold in winters
, especially in higher altitudes. Some parts of the
state also get cut off
from the rest of the world in winter when they are
snowed out
completely.
Language The main languages in the state are
Kashmiri, Ladakhi, Hindi and
English.
ConnectivityJammu and Kashmir's mountainous
landscape and extreme weather
conditions make
travel across the state a litle difficult. But with
only three airports (at Srinagar, Leh
and Jammu ) and with almost
no railway ( Jammu is the last
station in the north) road travel is the only
option for travel in the state and due credit must be given to the
State and the Border Roads Organisation who make and maintain these roads
under such extreme conditions.
Tourism forms an
integral part of the state's economy. You
can discover paradise in the ancient cities of Vaishnodevi,
Katra and Jammu
with their temples, in the enchanting
valley of Pahalgam, in the high
greens of Gulmarg , in the picturesque
hills of Patnitop
, in the stark landscape of Leh ,
Ladakh with its colorful fairs
and festivals or in ever enchanting Srinagar with its
romantic houseboats.
Shikaras
(houseboats) are a common feature in lakes
and rivers
across the Kashmir valley. Some houseboats and
hotels remain open in winter -
heated with ‘bukharis’, a typical
Kashmiri stove.
Srinagar, the
capital city, has some interesting tourist
spots like the Shankaracharya Temple
atop a hill called
Takht-e-Suleiman, the
Dal and Nagin
lakes, the Hari Parbat
Fort, the temple of goddess
Sharika, the shrine
of Muslim saint Makhdoorn
Sahib, and the historic Sikh
Gurudwara Chatti Padshahi.
Typical
Kashmiri cuisine is the lamb biriyani
and mutton roganjosh , the former a
rice preparation with lamb and the latter a thick gravy curry,
tangy and tasty.
