Rising from
the heart of the Thar Desert like a golden
mirage is the city of Jaisalmer, with a
yellow sandstone fort dominating the city in
all its amber-hued splendours. The setting
sun turning Jaisalmer into a beautiful golden brown
is a spectacular sight.

hot and dry summers from
April-Oct (average temperatures 25-42 deg. celsius). At times,
the temperature may even rise to 45° C.

chilly (average temperatures 8-24
deg. celsius). Jaisalmer does not receive much of

English (in tourist spots)
are the main languages.
Jaisalmer has
interesting legends associated with it. The
life within the citadel conjures up images of medieval
majesty visible in its narrow lanes
strewn with magnificent palaces, havelis,
temples and of course skilled
artisans and ubiquitous
camels.
The perfect time to visit the
golden city is during the Desert
Festival held in Jan/Feb. every
year, when the city comes alive with brilliant colours, music
and laughter. Exciting competitions and
camel races enliven the festival and not to
be missed is the turban-tying contest.
Colourful craft bazaars are set up for the
occasion and a sound and light spectacle is
organized with folk artistes performing
against the splendid backdrop of the famous sand
dunes on the full moon night
.
Places of
interest in and around Jaisalmer include the Golden
Fort with 99 bastions, Salim Sing Ki
Haveli, Patwon ki Haveli, Nathumal ki Haveli,
TaziaTower, Mool Sagar, Gadisar Lake, Desert
National Park and Gyan
Bhandar. Also popular are the Sam Sand
dunes, where one can surf
the unreliable golden
sands for a thrilling adventure.
Shopping for
block printed textiles, fine
jewellery and handicraft
items can be a nice
experience too.
