More about B.R.
Hills
Climate The BR Hills Wildlife sanctuary is open
throughout the year, but the best time to
sight wildlife is June-Oct and a
comfortable, relaxing time would be
winter to early summer . The climate
varies with the variation in the altitude, with maximum
temperature varying between 20-38°C, and minimum temperatures
varying between 9-16°C.
Language The main languages spoken
here are Kannada, Tamil, Hindi and
English.
Spread over an
area of 540 sq. km, the sanctuary derives its
name "Biligiri " either from the
white rock face or the white mist and the silver clouds that cover
these lofty hills. An amazing diversity of
vegetation including
sholas and high-altitude grasslands
support a rich variety of fauna, avi-fauna,
insects and butterflies and many endemic species of
plants including valuable
medicinal
ones.
The
forests in the hills form an important
wildlife corridor between the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats,
linking the largest populations of Asian
elephants and tigers in South India. But the
flagship species is
the Indian gaur. Other
mammals here include the leopard,
sambhar, chital, barking deer, the rare
four-horned antelope, Dhole (wild
dog), sloth bears, squirrels and flying
squirrels. There are several species of birds
and reptiles
too.
The temple atop the hill
of Lord Ranganatha (a form of the
Hindu god Vishnu) celebrates an
annual Car festival of
the deity, which attracts thousands of pilgrims from
far and wide.
