The capital of the Early Chalukyas, Badami is picturesquely situated at the mouth of a ravine between two rocky hills. Badami is famous for its four cave temples - all hewn out of sand stone on the precipice of a hill and connected through a flight of stairs.

The first temple in Badami dates back to the 5th century, has gigantic carvings of manifestations of the Hindu god, Shiva in bas relief. and enshrines a Shivalingam. The second temple is dedicated to the incarnations of the Hindu god Vishnu . The third rock cut temple is a 100 feet deep cave, with carved images of incarnations of the Hindu god Vishnu . Further up, is a Jain rock cut temple.
