In
winter the area is a paradise for
snow sports, The season extends from
Jan-Mar, during this time skiing
festivals and the National
Championships are held. The Auli
slopes, descending from 9150 to 8750
ft are flanked by stately conifers
and oaks, which cut wind
velocity to the minimum.
Adding to the thrill of
skiing is a 180-degree view
of Himalayan peaks, which include Nanda
Devi (23,451 ft), Kamet (23,268 ft), Mana
Parvat (21,819 ft) and Dunagiri
(21,198 ft), seemingly only a snowball's throw away.
The conditions
for skiing are perfect at Auli. A 1500 ft long
ski-lift and an 2400 ft long
chair-lift link the upper and lower slopes,
and snow beaters and snow-packing
machines maintain the smoothness of
the slopes. Skiers can enjoy almost 20 km of virgin
slopes, which provide excellent opportunities for
cross-country, slalom and down-hill
skiing events. Clifftop Club ,
one of the world's finest ski resorts is
located here.
And in
summer guests can enjoy numerous
marked walks and mountain bike
trails. At the backdrop of the resort lies the famous
high altitude Gorson Reserve Forest which is
richly inhabited by rare Himalayan wildlife.
Auli can also be reached by a ropeway ( said to be India's longest).
