Egypt is a transcontinental country spanning across North Africa, the Middle East and Southwest Asia due to the inclusion of Sinai Peninsula, a land bridge to Asia.  Egypt is predominantly Muslim, with the majority being adherents of the Sunni and Sufi branches of Islam. Egyptian culture has five thousand years of recorded history. Ancient Egypt was among the earliest civilizations that influenced later cultures of Europe, Middle East and Africa. The Egyptians were one of the first to codify design elements in art and architecture - the Heiroglyphics are still used to decipher mysteries of the past.

Though Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa and the Middle East, due to its aridity, the population is concentrated along the narrow Nile Valley and Delta, while the large areas of the Sahara Desert are sparsely inhabited. The northernmost city and the second largest - Alexandria, was the historic setting for the stormy relationship between Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Also the center of learning in the ancient world, places to visit here include the National Museum, Catacomb, Roman Theater, Pompey’s Pillar and Montazah gardens.

Cairo, the capital of Egypt is the largest city. Due to the high population density, it is chaotic, noisy, polluted and totally unpredictable, with mud-brick houses leaning up against towering modern office blocks and flashy cars crowding donkey-drawn carts. The sheer intensity of the city will either seduce or appal the visitor, but this is routine for the locals who live in such close proximity to millennia of history (when the smog lifts, the Pyramids appear). One of the seven wonders of the world, the Pyramids of Giza, with their extraordinary geometry and age, are the planet's oldest tourist attraction. These amazing architectural accomplishments are part of a massive necropolis or burial site. The Sphinx sits nearby, a 50m-long feline character carved from a single block of stone. Other interesting places in the area include the Egyptian Museum (containing more than 120,000 relics from almost every period of ancient Egyptian history) and Khan El Khalili Bazaars (market in the old city selling good-quality clothing, cloth, spices, souvenirs, traditional jewelry, perfumes and housing several coffee houses that serve Arabic coffee and offer shishas). Not to be missed is the experience of cruising along the river Nile in a cruise boat, visiting a wider variety of antiquities and seeing the rural life as villages pass by.

The southern city of Luxor contains numerous ancient artifacts, such as the Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, Queen Hatchepsut Temple and Colossi of Memnon. Halfway from Luxor, travelling downsouth along the Nile, one comes across the majestic Edfu Temple along its banks, dedicated to Horus. Kon Ombo temple, the town's ruined yet imposing Graeco-Roman temple is in a particularly beautiful setting overlooking the Nile. Egypt's sunniest and southernmost city, on the banks of the massive artificial reservoir - Lake Nasser - has a distinct African atmosphere. Aswan's three attractions are the Philae Temple (perched on a beautiful island, 500 m from its original site and dedicated to goddess Isis), High Dam (an engineering marvel, constructed to contain the waters of the Nile to irrigate the farms nearby) and the unfinished Obelisque (when a crack appeared, the construction was stopped). The twin temples of Abu Simbel stand on the western banks of Lake Nasser.

Temperatures in Egypt average between 80 °F (27 °C) and 90 °F (32 °C) in summer, with the south wind Khamaseen bringing in sand and dust and raising the temperature in the desert to more than 100 °F (38 °C). Temperatures average between 55 °F (13 °C) and 70 °F (21 °C) in winter, and some areas receive a little rain. The rise in sea levels due to global warming threatens Egypt’s densely populated coastal strip.

Greece, lies at the juncture of three continents - Asia, Europe and Africa. It consists of a mountainous mainland jutting out into the sea at the southern end, the Attica peninsula separated from the mainland by a canal and numerous islands. Greece is regarded as the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy & literature, political science, major scientific and mathematic principles, Western drama of tragedy and comedy and the Olympic Games.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is a great 'walking city', with bustling outdoor cafes, pedestrian streets that wind through the city's ancient sites, the Acropolis, various museums, ancient temples and gardens. At the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula is Cape Sounion, renowned for the ruins of the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon. In the heart of the mainland is Central Greece, the most mountainous district, with a rich and distinctive history. Located here is the modern-town of Delphi, home to the Oracle of Apollo, considered to be the centre of earth in ancient Greece.

The Saronic Gulf in Aegean Sea is home to the Saronic Islands, main ones being Hydra island and island of Spetses. Famous for sea battles in the past and having played an important part in the war of independence, these islands today make excellent sea resorts. Greece's playground, the upscale island of Myconos, is one of the top holiday destinations in the world. Delos Island in the Aegean Sea has two major claims to fame - it was the birthplace of the Greek gods Apollo and Artemis and it was the place after which the Delian League was named because the treasury for the league was kept at Delos. Delos and Myconos islands are part of the Cyclades group of islands. The southernmost of the group - Santorini - is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands, about 200 kms south-east of the mainland. Essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion on one island, the geological formation is known for its spectacular physical beauty, and along with a dynamic nightlife, has made the island one of Europe's tourist hot spots.

Often cited as an example of the healthy Mediterranean diet, the cuisine of Greece has influences from Italian, Balkan and Middle Eastern cuisine. Greek cuisine incorporates fresh ingredients into a variety of local dishes such as moussaka, stifado, Greek Salad, spanakopita and the world famous Souvlaki.

Greece generally has mild wet winters and hot dry summers. Winter temperatures can be severe in the mountains and even Athens can get viciously cold. Conditions are perfect between Easter and mid-June - beaches and ancient sites are relatively uncrowded and accommodation is cheaper and easier to find than in the mid-June to end of August, which is high season.
