A place of
historic importance, very close to the
Pakistan border,
is Amritsar. One of the most
sacred pilgrim spots for Sikhs, the
Golden Temple at Amritsar is
famous for its full golden dome.

Climate Amritsar has an extreme,
continental climate with very hot
summers -
Apr to June (average temperatures 38-42 deg. celsius) and
cold winters - Nov-Mar (average temperatures
3-6 deg. celsius). Monsoons are between July and
Sep.
Language The main languages are
the Punjabi dialect of Maajhi ,
Hindi and English .
The
Golden Temple is built on a square marble of 67 feet and is
a two-storied structure. Maharaja Ranjit Singh
had the upper half of the building built
with approximately 400 kg of gold leaf.

The city is
famous for its culinary delicacies like multi-layered
parathas, tandoori kulchas, puris
(all forms of salted pancakes made differently),
bhatura channa (a gravy
dish), jam, marmalades, sharbat
(a refreshing cool drink), rabri
(sweet), lassi (thick
buttermilk, sweet or salt), snacks like
satpuras and
samosas, fried fish,
seekh kabab, mutton tikka, barbecued
chicken and spicy pickles. The
celebrated papad and
vadian (similar to wafers) from Amritsar have
become the subject of many local rhymes and jingles while
Amritsaris have a sweet tooth for pinnis,
balushahis and gur ka
halwa.
